Why repeat customers matter
It usually costs much less to sell again to someone who already trusts you than to win a new customer. A small number of regulars often account for a large share of a small business's income.
Know who your regulars are
You cannot look after people you cannot identify. Keep a record for each customer: their name and number, what they buy and how much they spend. With that, you can spot who comes often, who has gone quiet and who is your best customer.
Simple things that work
Nothing here needs special software.
- Remember names and what people usually order.
- Message a regular who has not been in for a while, with something useful rather than a generic promotion.
- Thank people after a big purchase.
- Offer a small reward for repeat visits, but only one you can afford.
- Ask for feedback and act on it.
Do not over-promise
A discount you cannot sustain teaches customers to wait for the next one. Reliability, honesty about stock and prices and treating people well are cheaper and last longer.
The short version
Keep a record of your customers, reach out to the ones who have gone quiet and reward loyalty in ways you can afford.
